What is an AI Opportunity Audit?

By Joey van Vliet, founderUpdated

In short

An AI Opportunity Audit is structured upfront research that establishes, for each business process, which AI applications are technically feasible, what they are expected to deliver and in what order to tackle them. The result is a prioritised list with the reasoning behind it, not a working AI application.

What an audit delivers

An audit ends in a decision document, not in software. At the very least, it should contain:

  • A process overview: which processes there are, how much time they take and where they get stuck.
  • Opportunities per process: which AI application is conceivable and what it should do.
  • A priority: an order based on impact, complexity and risk, so it’s clear what comes first.
  • Reasoning per opportunity: why or why not, with the assumptions spelled out.
  • A first step: which application to build first and what that takes.

Audit or quick scan?

A quick scan is shorter: a conversation or a questionnaire and a rough estimate. That’s enough to tell whether there’s anything to gain. An audit goes into the process, looks at real data and volumes, and gives you the reasoning to base an investment decision on.

The difference lies in the question it answers. A quick scan answers: is there anything to gain here? An audit answers: what do we tackle first, what does it cost and what does it deliver? If you want a quick first impression, try the AI scan.

Why it matters in practice

An audit pays off most when you have several candidate processes and don’t know which should come first. If everyone points to the same bottleneck, you can often skip this step and start small straight away.

It also pays off when you need to justify an investment to a board, shareholders or a lender. The report is then the document the decision rests on. How to calculate the return is covered in calculating a business case for AI.

An example: at De Duurzame Jongens, the AI Opportunity Audit identified €500,000 a year in growth opportunities.

What to look out for

Ask beforehand exactly what you’ll get, and whether the report is allowed to advise against applications. An audit that only finds opportunities and never says “I wouldn’t start on this” is a sales document. The value is in the trade-off: which processes drop out, and why.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between an AI audit and an AI workshop?

A workshop transfers knowledge and produces ideas. An audit examines your own processes and data and delivers a decision document, with reasoning per opportunity and an order of priority. A workshop shows what’s possible; an audit tells you what to do first.

When is an AI Opportunity Audit too early?

When there’s no internal owner or sponsor yet, when the processes themselves are too chaotic to assess, or when the organisation has hardly any basic knowledge of AI. In those cases, a short knowledge session or tidying up the process will get you further.
