What is Shopify Plus?

Shopify Plus is Shopify's enterprise tier, designed for brands that are outgrowing the limits of standard Shopify. The platform offers higher API limits, Shopify Functions for checkout customisation, multi-store management and B2B functionality. Brands run the back end on Shopify Plus and often build the front end headless, for example with Next.js, for full control over speed and customer experience. It is designed to handle heavy peak traffic around sales moments.

Built for clients including Tata Steel, M&G Investments, Digistore24, Toppers in Concert, Bar-le-Duc and Loogman

Sound familiar?

Three signs that a standard Shopify theme is holding back further growth.

The checkout no longer fits the sales model

Shopify's standard checkout leaves no room for your own steps, dynamic bundles, B2B prices per account or a subscription flow. Without Plus you're stuck with what the theme allows, while your commercial needs have long outgrown it.

Peak moments take the store down

During a drop, Black Friday or a big email campaign, the checkout fills up and apps, stock and flows fall out of sync. A regular Shopify plan isn't built for that load, and downtime at exactly that moment costs the most revenue.

Migrating from the current platform is too risky to do yourself

Products, customer data, order history and SEO value have to come across from Magento, WooCommerce or another system without losing rankings, discount codes or active subscriptions. That's exactly where in-house teams get stuck.

Is Plus worth it yet?

When to move from Shopify to Plus, and when not to

Shopify Plus isn't simply a bigger subscription. You pay for things you only need at a certain kind of complexity: multiple stores under one management, higher API limits, changes to the checkout, and scripts that set discounts and shipping rules.

If you're not there yet, Plus is mostly a bigger bill. If you run several countries or brands, have a B2B side with its own pricing agreements, or are hitting the limits of the regular API when syncing with your ERP, it starts to pay off.

  • Multiple stores or countries under one management
  • A customisable checkout and your own discount rules
  • Higher API limits for ERP integrations
Headless or not

What you gain with your own front end, and what it costs

Headless means you keep Shopify for payments, orders and stock, but build the store itself in something like Next.js. What you gain is speed and complete freedom in how your story looks, without having to rebuild the payment infrastructure.

What it costs is maintenance. Your marketing team can change most of a theme site themselves; your own front end needs a developer for structural changes. That's fine if you have that capacity or hire it in. It's a problem if you only find out after handover.

  • Shopify for payments and orders, your own front end for the rest
  • Complete design freedom and measurably faster pages
  • Ask up front who will be working on it a year from now
International

More countries means more than translating the copy

With an international roll-out, the attention usually goes to language, while the complexity lies elsewhere. Prices per market, VAT rules that differ by country, shipping costs and delivery times, return addresses, and payment methods that vary completely from country to country. iDEAL in the Netherlands tells you nothing about what you need in Germany or France.

Search engines also need work that often gets forgotten. A URL structure for each market, hreflang that's correct, and making sure your translated pages don't compete with each other for the same keywords.

  • Prices, VAT and shipping rules per market
  • Payment methods that differ by country
  • Correct hreflang and URL structure per market
What you get from us

Headless experience, integrations that work and builds designed for peak moments: why D2C brands bring their Shopify Plus projects to us.

A dedicated team, not a freelancer fitting it in

Strategy, design, development and integrations sit in one team, with one point of contact. You work with people who have built Shopify Plus projects before and know the platform's limits before your project starts.

Headless on Next.js, not stuck to a theme

Where most agencies stop at a customised Liquid theme, we also build fully headless on Next.js with the Storefront API. That makes room for a checkout and customer experience you simply can't create with a standard theme.

Architecture that handles peak load

Black Friday, a product launch or a TV ad creates peaks an average online store isn't used to. We set up the caching strategy, app integrations and infrastructure specifically for those moments, so checkout and stock stay stable when it really matters.

A production-ready platform

Native theme or headless build: you get a fully configured, tested Shopify Plus environment, including handover to your own team.

Quality and security to ISO standards

Our way of working is built around ISO 27001 and ISO 9001: fixed procedures for information security and code quality. The certification applies to our organisation and its defined scope. What we set up per store in terms of access, logging and separate environments, we document separately.

Documentation, not a black box

We document architecture decisions, custom apps and checkout changes, so your platform doesn't stay dependent on a single developer.

Read about our full approach
  1. 01

    Audit and platform choice

We map the current stack: theme or platform, apps, checkout flow, integrations and conversion data. Based on that, we decide whether a native Liquid theme or a headless build with Next.js best fits your revenue, growth ambitions and international plans.

  2. 02

    Architecture and scope

We agree which Shopify Functions, checkout customisations via Checkout Extensibility, B2B features and custom apps are needed, and whether to use Hydrogen with Oxygen or a custom Next.js front end on the Storefront API.

  3. 03

    Design and build

We turn Figma designs into theme sections or Next.js components. We build custom apps such as subscriptions, configurators and B2B portals in TypeScript on Shopify App Bridge, and checkout extensions separately in Shopify's checkout UI extensions.

  4. 04

    Migration and data transfer

If the store is coming from Magento, WooCommerce or another platform, we move products, customers, orders and history across, with 301 redirects and preserved SEO value as a standard part of the project.

  5. 05

    Peak load and checkout testing

Ahead of sales and peak days, we test the environment under load, validate checkout extensions and app integrations such as Klaviyo, ReCharge and Gorgias under pressure, and fine-tune caching and the Oxygen edge configuration.

  6. 06

    Launch and hypercare

After a soft launch with monitoring comes a hypercare period, in which we follow checkout, integrations and performance under real load before the project moves into regular ongoing development.

A Shopify Plus platform is never finished at launch

  • Performance monitoringWe monitor load times, Core Web Vitals and Shopify API limits, on both the native theme and the headless Next.js front end.
  • Peak loadWe test and scale ahead of Black Friday, sales and campaigns, so checkout, stock and app integrations stay stable when traffic suddenly spikes.
  • Updates and securityWe keep up with new Shopify API versions, checkout extensions and app updates, and check access rights, data flows and payment flows.
  • IntegrationsWe maintain and extend integrations with partners such as Klaviyo, ReCharge and Gorgias, and with ERP or stock systems as the platform grows.
  • Conversion optimisationWe test variants in the checkout and funnel, and use new Shopify Functions or Hydrogen capabilities where they demonstrably add to revenue.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a Shopify Plus website cost?

That depends heavily on the approach: a native theme build is a different project from a fully headless build with Next.js, and the investment is mainly driven by custom apps, integrations and whether data needs to be migrated. We agree scope and a quote in a no-obligation conversation.

What is the difference between Shopify and Shopify Plus?

Shopify Plus is Shopify's enterprise tier, aimed at brands from around €1 million in annual revenue, with extras such as Shopify Functions, Hydrogen, Oxygen, B2B functionality, multiple stores under one account and higher API limits that a standard plan doesn't offer.

Can I go headless with Shopify Plus?

Yes, Shopify Plus supports headless commerce via the Storefront API. We usually build a Next.js front end on top of it rather than the official Hydrogen framework, because that gives more freedom in performance and custom logic.

How long does a migration from Magento or WooCommerce to Shopify Plus take?

That depends on the number of products, integrations and markets. A migration consists of an audit and data plan, a design phase, the build including migration of products, customers and orders, and hypercare straight after launch. We agree the planning in advance.

Do you also build on standard Shopify, or only on Plus?

Both. If your store fits comfortably in standard Shopify, that's what we recommend: it costs less to run. Plus pays off with multiple stores or countries, your own checkout or heavy traffic between your ERP and the store.

Will my online store stay up during a peak such as Black Friday?

Shopify Plus is built to handle heavy peak load, and we set up the architecture, caching strategy and app integrations specifically for it, so checkout and stock stay stable even when traffic suddenly spikes.

Does Shopify Plus work with Klaviyo, ReCharge and Gorgias?

Yes. These are official Shopify Plus integration partners for email marketing, subscriptions and customer service, and we use them as standard as part of a D2C stack.
