Verkade wanted to boost sales of its chocolate bars with a nationwide prize promotion. Shoppers buy a bar, upload their receipt and see straight away whether they've won. Your Tech Club built the platform: the campaign page, the automatic receipt validation and the dashboard where the team follows the promotion.

Why couldn't this be done with a standard promotion tool?

The promotion combined three requirements that standard tools don't meet together: peak load, automated receipt checks and full control over personal data. The bar's packaging couldn't be changed, so entry had to work through a photo of the receipt. Every entry then had to be checked for validity, and reading along manually wasn't an option at these volumes.

Then there was compliance. The platform processes participants' personal data and photos in line with the GDPR. Your Tech Club is ISO 27001 certified and the platform was set up according to those principles. That called for our own infrastructure rather than a third-party campaign tool.

How does entering work for the shopper?

In three steps: buy, upload, win. The landing page is mobile-first, because most people photograph their receipt with their phone in or just outside the shop. The shorter the flow, the lower the barrier to taking part.

The promotion's campaign page: the Dutch headline "Verkade chocolade een nieuw jasje? Mijn huis ook graag!" (Verkade chocolate in a new wrapper? My house too, please!), a milk chocolate bar and a receipt with a prompt to upload it.

After a valid upload, the participant taps a digital Verkade bar that breaks apart in an animation and shows straight away whether they've won a prize. Anyone who doesn't win is invited to try again with another flavour.

How are receipts checked automatically?

Three phone screens from the entry flow: uploading the receipt, filling in address details and the confirmation that the entry has been received.

With Google Document AI. It reads the uploaded receipt, after which the platform looks for the Verkade products on it and checks whether the purchase meets the promotion's terms.

The platform also detects duplicate entries, so the same receipt can't take part twice. Together with limits per email address, per IP address and per day, that keeps the promotion fair without manual checks.

What does the Verkade team see in the dashboard?

The upload screen on desktop with a QR code to switch to a phone, next to the phone screen where the photographed receipt has been approved.

The number of entries, the number of unique participants and the approved and rejected receipts, while the promotion is running.

  • Winner management

Winners are drawn according to rules set in advance, automatically or manually, with the full entry data alongside for verification.

  • Export for follow-up

Entry data can be exported to CSV, so the marketing team can analyse or follow up on the results themselves.

  • Security as a starting point

Front end and back end are separated, uploads are stored securely and traffic is encrypted. Logging, monitoring and rate limiting limit abuse.

The admin dashboard: login screen, a bar chart of entries per week and lists of the most scanned products, supermarkets and cities.
The promotion coming to an end on the campaign page, with a timer counting down days, hours, minutes and seconds.

What can Verkade do with it now?

Product picker in the campaign: a row of Verkade bars from which the participant chooses the flavour they bought.

The promotion runs on its own infrastructure, entries are processed automatically and the team keeps sight of the numbers and control of the data throughout.

The platform is modular. The campaign page, the receipt validation and the dashboard are separate from each other, so a next promotion can run on the same foundation.

At the end of the promotion, Verkade announced the winner of the €10,000 in a video on Instagram.

Frequently asked questions

Who made Verkade's promotion platform?

Your Tech Club. We designed and built the campaign page, the automatic receipt validation and the admin dashboard, and set up the hosting and security for the promotion. Verkade remained the owner of the data.

What did Your Tech Club build for Verkade?

A custom promotion platform for a nationwide campaign. Shoppers upload their receipt, the platform checks it automatically and the participant sees straight away whether they've won a prize. The Verkade team manages the promotion from its own dashboard.

What technology does Verkade's promotion platform run on?

On its own infrastructure, with Google Document AI to read the receipts. Uploads are stored securely, front end and back end are separated and the dashboard shows real-time statistics with CSV export.

How does automatic receipt validation work?

The participant uploads a photo of the receipt. Google Document AI reads the text, after which the platform checks whether the right products are on it and whether the purchase falls within the promotion period. Duplicate receipts are detected and rejected. Only doubtful cases go to a person.

How do you prevent fraud in a prize promotion?

With a combination of measures: detecting duplicate uploads, limits per email address, per IP address and per day, checks on file type and size, and rate limiting on the API. Every entry is logged, so it's possible to reconstruct afterwards how a winner was chosen.

Can the platform be reused for a next promotion?

Yes. The setup is modular: campaign page, validation and dashboard are separate from each other. A new promotion needs new design, prizes and terms, not a new foundation.
