Connect ChatGPT to Shopify

Add a product with a photo from your chat, ask what you sold per product last month, or set up a collection for the holidays. With the Shopify plugin for ChatGPT you do that from a conversation. Here's what the plugin can do, what Shopify deliberately blocks and what to watch out for.

The situation

A lot of work in an online store comes back every week: creating and updating products, maintaining collections, correcting stock, looking up figures. Shopify's plugin brings that work into ChatGPT. For some tasks a Shopify panel opens next to the conversation, where you can, for example, adjust a new product's title, description and price before you save it.

Shopify has set clear limits. Money and paid orders stay out of reach, as do your live theme and settings such as payments, taxes and domains. And once you grant access, the data you selected leaves Shopify and falls under OpenAI's terms.

What moves between them

For each item: which direction it goes, when, and why. This is the starting point; in the first conversation we fit it to your situation.

  1. 01Sales and order questionsShopify → ChatGPTFor the weekly overview

The plugin answers questions about sales, orders, products and customers from your Shopify analytics, with tables and charts. Short, specific questions work best, such as this month's average order value compared with last month.

  2. 02Looking up orders and customersShopify → ChatGPTWhen a customer asks

Recent orders with payment and fulfilment status, up to fifty at a time, and per order the lines, the address and the tracking. You look up customers by name, email, location or tag. The plugin only reads orders and customers.

  3. 03Products, photos and collectionsChatGPT → ShopifyFor a new collection

Create products with variants and inventory tracking, change titles, descriptions and prices, add a photo from the chat and create collections, including smart collections based on rules.

  4. 04Correcting stockChatGPT → ShopifyAfter a stock count or delivery

The plugin first reads the stock per location and then sets the new quantity, with a reason such as received, correction or damaged. If the stock changed in the meantime, the update stops.

  5. 05Pages, menus and translationsChatGPT → ShopifyAfter you confirm

For parts of your store without a dedicated action, such as pages, blogs, menus, metafields, markets and translations, the plugin uses the Shopify Admin API and asks for confirmation first.

Off the shelf or custom

Not always. If an existing integration for Shopify and ChatGPT does exactly what you need, we'll tell you.

What already exists

The Shopify plugin for ChatGPT is built by Shopify. You don't install it from the Shopify App Store but from ChatGPT, and then approve the data access level in the Shopify admin. What the plugin can do depends on that access and on your own account's permissions. You connect one store at a time. Shopify charges nothing extra for it; you pay any ChatGPT subscription to OpenAI.

What the plugin can't do: edit or publish your live theme, change payments, taxes and domains, or refund, cancel and mark orders as paid. Shopify blocks those actions even if you grant write access. Large batches run item by item and can stop partway; you then finish them in the Shopify admin.

When you need custom work
  • Orders need to flow on to your accounting, ERP or fulfilment. That is a fixed integration that always runs, not a chat question.
  • ChatGPT needs to combine Shopify with purchase prices, lead times or stock from another system.
  • You want an assistant for customers in your own store, rather than a tool for your team.
  • You have large bulk changes; those work better through an import or your own integration.
AI in between

AI reads, sorts and prepares a suggestion. Where it matters, a person decides.

Product copy as a starting point

If you only give a name and a price, the plugin writes a description itself. Useful as a start, but check claims, sizes and materials before the product goes live.

Mention Shopify by name

Shopify recommends putting @Shopify in your message. Otherwise ChatGPT sometimes replies with instructions for the Shopify admin instead of making the change. Ask one question at a time, too.

What to watch

Data leaves Shopify

After you give permission, the data you selected goes to OpenAI and falls under OpenAI's terms. For a team, use ChatGPT Business or Enterprise, where OpenAI doesn't train on your data by default and a data processing agreement is available.

You can't lower access

You can't reduce an access level you've approved. If you want less access, you uninstall the integration and install it again. So start with the lowest level you need.

No API token of your own for AI

Shopify asks you to use the official integration and not to create an API token or build your own integration to connect an AI tool. You revoke access by uninstalling the integration in the Shopify admin.

You remain responsible

Shopify doesn't review or approve actions by AI tools. If ChatGPT makes a wrong change, you are responsible for it, including towards your customers under the GDPR. Check changes in the Shopify admin.

How we build an integration

  1. What goes where

Which data moves, in which direction, and which system wins when two values differ. That is written down before anything gets built. For this integration, that means: Sales and order questions, Looking up orders and customers, Products, photos and collections, Correcting stock, Pages, menus and translations.

  2. Fields and rules

For every field, how it translates between the systems: statuses, VAT codes, general ledger accounts, item numbers. And what happens with a duplicate or a missing value. For this integration, that means: Data leaves Shopify, You can't lower access, No API token of your own for AI, You remain responsible.

  3. Testing with real cases

In a sandbox or test administration, with the exceptions you actually run into: credit notes, partial deliveries, changed customer details.

  4. Live, with logging and monitoring

Every sync is logged, and when something fails, someone gets an alert. If a vendor changes its API, we update the integration.

No account manager. You talk to someone who builds integrations themselves, and who will tell you when a standard integration is enough.

Frequently asked questions

Does Shopify have an official integration with ChatGPT?

Yes. Shopify built the Shopify plugin for ChatGPT itself. You install it from ChatGPT and approve access in your Shopify admin. Shopify charges nothing extra for it; you only pay for your ChatGPT subscription.

Can ChatGPT refund or cancel orders?

No. Shopify blocks refunds, cancellations, marking orders as paid, returns and gift cards for AI tools, even with write access. ChatGPT can read orders and customers.

How is this different from the Shopify connector for Claude?

Both are built by Shopify and have the same limits: no live theme, no store settings and nothing involving money. In ChatGPT it's called a plugin, and for some tasks you work in a Shopify panel next to the conversation. If you pin Shopify in the sidebar, you get a home screen with a summary of your store.

Can I connect several stores?

One at a time, even if the stores are in the same organisation. Ask ChatGPT to switch to another store and authorise that one again. Then start a new conversation, because an old one can keep using the previous connection.

Does the plugin replace Shopify Sidekick?

No. According to Shopify, the plugin doesn't replace the Shopify admin or Sidekick, the AI assistant inside the admin. Payments, taxes, domains and your live store are handled in the admin.
