INTEGRATIONSSHOPIFY + CLAUDE

Connect Claude to Shopify

Adding a new product, updating stock after a count, or asking what you sold per product last month. With the connector Shopify built for Claude, you do it from a conversation. Here's what it can do, what Shopify deliberately blocks and what to watch out for.

The situation

Online stores do a lot of repetitive work in the Shopify admin: writing product copy, maintaining collections, adjusting stock, looking up figures. Claude can prepare or carry out that work, and answer analysis questions with tables and charts from your own store data.

Shopify has set clear limits. Money and paid orders stay out of reach, as do your live theme and store settings. That makes the connector a good fit for catalogue work and insight, not for order processing.

What moves between them

For each item: which direction it goes, when, and why. This is the starting point; in the first conversation we fit it to your situation.

  1. 01Sales and order figuresShopify → ClaudeFor the weekly overview

Claude answers questions about sales, orders, products and customers with ShopifyQL and shows tables and charts. Short, specific questions work best, such as this month's average order value compared with last month.

  2. 02Look up orders and customersShopify → ClaudeWhen a customer has a question

Recent orders with payment and fulfilment status, and for each order the line items, address and tracking. You look up customers by name, email, city or tag. Claude only reads this data.

  3. 03Products and collectionsClaude → ShopifyFor a new collection

Claude creates products with variants and inventory tracking, edits titles, descriptions, prices and SKUs, and sets up to fifty products at once to active, draft or archived.

  4. 04Correct inventoryClaude → ShopifyAfter a stock count or delivery

Claude first reads current stock per location and then sets the new quantity, with a reason such as received, correction or damaged. If stock has changed in the meantime, the update stops.

  5. 05Discount codeClaude → ShopifyFor a promotion

Percentage discount codes, for the whole store, specific products or a collection. You manage existing codes and fixed-amount discounts in the Shopify admin.

Off the shelf or custom

Not always. If an existing integration for Shopify and Claude does exactly what you need, we'll tell you.

What already exists

The Shopify connector for Claude is built by Shopify and verified by Anthropic. You install it from Claude, not from the Shopify App Store, and then approve the level of data access in the Shopify admin. What Claude can do depends on that access and on your own account's permissions. You connect one store at a time.

What the connector can't do: edit or publish your live theme, change settings such as payments, taxes and domains, or refund, cancel or mark orders as paid. Shopify blocks those actions even if you grant write access. For pages, menus, metafields and translations, Claude uses the Admin API and asks for confirmation first.

When you need custom work
  • Orders need to flow on to your accounting, ERP or fulfilment; that's a fixed integration, not a chat question.
  • You want a shopping assistant for customers in your own store, rather than a tool for your team.
  • Large bulk changes: the connector works item by item and can stop halfway.
  • Claude needs to combine Shopify with data from other systems, such as purchase prices or lead times.
AI in between

AI reads, sorts and prepares a suggestion. Where it matters, a person decides.

Product copy, checked

If you only give a name and a price, the connector writes a description itself. Handy as a starting point, but check claims, sizes and materials before a product goes live.

Analysis without an export

How many new versus returning customers did you have this month? Claude answers that from your Shopify analytics, without a spreadsheet. Ask one question at a time; stacked comparisons can fail.

What to watch

Customer data leaves Shopify

Once you consent, the selected data goes to Claude and falls under Anthropic's terms. For a team, use Claude Team or Enterprise, where Anthropic is the processor and doesn't train on your data by default.

You can't lower access

You can't reduce an approved access level. If you want less access, you remove the integration and install it again. So start with the lowest level you need.

No custom API token for AI

Shopify advises against creating your own API token or building your own integration for an AI tool. Use the official connector, and remove it in the Shopify admin if you want to revoke access.

Switching stores

If you work with several stores, start a new conversation after switching. An old conversation may keep using the earlier connection.

How we build an integration

  1. What goes where

Which data moves, in which direction, and which system wins when two values differ. That is written down before anything gets built. For this integration, that means: Sales and order figures, Look up orders and customers, Products and collections, Correct inventory, Discount code.

  2. Fields and rules

For every field, how it translates between the systems: statuses, VAT codes, general ledger accounts, item numbers. And what happens with a duplicate or a missing value. For this integration, that means: Customer data leaves Shopify, You can't lower access, No custom API token for AI, Switching stores.

  3. Testing with real cases

In a sandbox or test administration, with the exceptions you actually run into: credit notes, partial deliveries, changed customer details.

  4. Live, with logging and monitoring

Every sync is logged, and when something fails, someone gets an alert. If a vendor changes its API, we update the integration.

No account manager. You talk to someone who builds integrations themselves, and who will tell you when a standard integration is enough.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an official Shopify integration for Claude?

Yes. Shopify built the Shopify connector for Claude itself and Anthropic has verified it. You install it through the connector directory in Claude and approve access in your Shopify admin.

Can Claude refund or cancel orders?

No. Shopify blocks refunds, cancellations, marking orders as paid, returns and gift cards for AI tools, even with write access. Claude can read orders and customers.

Can Claude edit my theme?

Only a theme that isn't live. Shopify advises duplicating your theme, letting Claude edit the copy and then publishing that copy yourself.

How is this different from Shopify Sidekick?

Sidekick is the AI assistant inside the Shopify admin itself. The connector brings Shopify into Claude, so you can combine it with other sources and conversations. According to Shopify, the connector doesn't replace the Shopify admin or Sidekick.

Can I connect more than one store?

One at a time, even if the stores are in the same organisation. You ask Claude to switch to another store and authorise it again. Then start a new conversation.
